Saying Goodbye to a Gallery

I started working at the Robert and Elaine Stein Galleries at WSU back in August as the Graduate Assistant and I love my job. The main part of my job is to assist with moving our permanent collection into a new museum standard gallery that is currently being built from the ground up. The gallery we have been using for that past 20 some years is a good one, but has some issues. In the current gallery we have had pest problems, leaks, and security concerns, so it is time for a new space!
We have over 700 pieces of work by local, international, famous, and unknown artists that vary from paintings, drawings, sculpture, media, and photography. When exhibiting work from our permanent collection and from visiting artists we hold many artist talks, receptions, and events to go along with exhibitions, so it will be nice to have a brand new large place to exhibit work and entertain visitors. The big move is scheduled to happen sometime in April, but we have been doing a lot of preparation work for the move such as relabeling and photographing the art, organizing and cleaning our physical artist and exhibition files, ordering supplies, and organizing our offices.

To say farewell to the old gallery we hosted our last event there, the Sumi Ink Club Drawing Event. With this event we invited anyone and everyone to come to the gallery to draw on the walls with ink and brushes and enjoy refreshments with us. We thought this would be a good way to send off the old gallery because the Sumi Ink Club is an idea that was formed in 2005 and has found its way into local communities all over the world to open social interactions and let people express themselves. The event was a lot of fun and we had a good turnout.
