I have been researching the story of how Dayton acquired a
mummy for the Dayton Society of Natural History back in the 1920s and came
across a great photo of one of the main figures, Dr. J. Morton Howell who made
it possible for Dayton to get the mummy. I presented the photo in my Local
History class and talked about how the photo portrays Dr. Howell and his wife
standing with another man. I had no idea who this other man was because there
was no description written on the photo. I found the picture in the Boonshoft
Museum of Discoveries documents they have on this topic and was hoping there
would be a document describing the photo and who was in it, but there was nothing.
After doing more research on the mummy and how she arrived in
Dayton I started researching other people involved with making this great
event happen in Dayton. Another important figure emerged, Herbert Eustis
Winlock. Mr. Winlock was the Egyptologist from the Metropolitan Museum of Art
who found the mummy in 1922. When looking up pictures of Mr. Winlock I realized he
looked very similar to the mystery man in the photo with Dr. Howell. I am very
confident that the mystery man is Mr. Winlock! Both Dr. Howell and Mr. Winlock
were living and working in Egypt at the same time and were known to have a
casual relationship. I have read some of their correspondences regarding the
mummy and they seemed to be good acquaintances. They
worked together to get a mummy to a local community to help locals of Dayton learn about
another cultures history. Here is the photo of Dr. Howell with the
“mystery man” and a photo of Mr. Winlock, what do you think? Winlock's Work
